Have You Given Up Trying To Lose Weight?

Have you given up trying to lose weight

One question I often ask my clients is ‘Have you given up trying to lose weight?’

  • Are you stuck in a rut with your weight loss efforts?
  • Are you unsure of what to try next?
  • Are you sick and tired of failing at yet another diet?
  • Are you unsure of where to go from here?

If you can relate to any of the above then chances are you have tried every diet that you felt would work for you. Perhaps you even had great success with some of them for a few months or a year. In the end though, they didn’t work for you because you couldn’t stick to them. It’s about now you start to feel like there is no hope for you and you are destined to remain as you are, unhappy with not only your body but also yourself.

The unfortunate truth is that diets rob us of our self-belief!

Our belief that we can succeed and have the life we dreamed of! They make us try the same cycle over and over but the results will always be the same because ultimately they don’t fit in with our lifestyle.

It is not us that has failed, but rather, the diet that has failed us!

The good news is that all is not lost! You can have the healthy life you want in a way that works for YOU. In a way that nurtures your self-belief and doesn’t destroy it!

In order to get our self-belief back however, there is much work to be done.

We have to undo the diet culture mindset which can take time.

We have to get down to basics and look at all the reasons the diets failed us and get comfortable with blaming the diet cycle and not ourselves. This process can be harder than it sounds, especially if you are someone who has ‘always been on a diet’. Chances are you have accumulated a lot of beliefs around food and your relationship to it without even realizing it!

We have to break free of the diet mindset in order to make space for our new ways of thinking. We have to clear the decks of all the garbage, negative self-talk and damaging behaviours that keep us stuck in the diet cycle.

So how do we do it? How do we get our self-belief back? We embark on a different kind of journey to lose the weight.

One where we are in charge, we choose which habits we want to take on and we do it slowly.

We prepare for the fact that this takes time and no matter how desperate we are to lose weight, we have patience.

Here are some of the ways you can begin to change your approach to food and get rid of the diet mindset.

1)   Break out of the diet mindset. Uncover all the negative thoughts you have around food and get rid of any of the ones that don’t serve you. For example if you hate counting calories then decide to stop it! If you hate giving up carbs then don’t! Whatever you hate about diets then make a list and decide not to incorporate any of those things into your new healthy lifestyle. They didn’t serve you before and they won’t serve you now!

2)   Decide what healthy habits you DO want to work on. Can you add more vegetables to your diet? Can you eat less takeaway? Can you move more in your day to day? Make a list of all the things you could do and WANT to do differently. The more detailed the better. What DO you want in your life?

3)   Pick ONE of the things from your list to work on. Some will be really easy and some more difficult. In order to train our self-belief muscle then I would recommend picking one that you know if you only focus on that, you can easily do it. As you succeed with these habits week after week you will start to see how powerful this method is and gain confidence in your ability to change almost anything!

4)   Once you have practiced this easy habit for two weeks or more depending on how easy you found it, add another, then another. Of course some will take longer than others and that’s OK! Patience and consistency are key!

Remember these habits will all add up and eventually you will have your healthy blueprint and be living the healthy life you wanted. Your self-belief will come back and as you gain confidence you will find new, braver habits that you want to try. It will become second nature and will not feel like dieting in any way, shape or form.

If you are still in a diet mindset then these habits will feel like you aren’t doing enough. It is important to address those thoughts and get rid of them. They don’t serve you. Think about it this way, if you are on the brink of giving up then what have you got to lose? You’ve tried everything else!
