We all get stuck in a rut sometimes. Perhaps you hate your job, you aren’t happy in your current relationship, you can’t seem to lose weight. All too often we can become too comfortable to move or make changes. We can become overwhelmed and paralysed by fear. We feel out of control and unable to move forward or make changes. Maybe when it comes to our own happiness we feel we don’t deserve it. Why make all these changes? Am I worth it? And the all too common “what if I don’t succeed?” If any of these thoughts are buzzing around in your head then the good news is there is a way out! It doesn’t have to be a nightmare struggle and it is much simpler than we think. Here are 5 things to do to dig yourself out of a rut!
Where are you stuck?
Are you just going through the motions? Do you hate your job? Are you in a stagnant relationship? Whichever area or areas of your life you are stuck with, it is important to identify them. Be honest with yourself. Make a list. This helps to break down that feeling of overwhelm and root out the main areas which you wish to change. Once you have a list of specific areas you wish to work on you can begin the process of becoming unstuck.
Why are you stuck?
This is an important aspect of freeing yourself because once you realise why you are there and what is keeping you there you can begin to remove these obstacles. Perhaps you don’t want to move jobs because you are worried what others will think? Perhaps you are afraid of ending your relationship because you fear being alone? You want to start that business but are afraid of failing? Fear keeps us stuck. Fear of the unknown, fear of your critics, fear of being alone, fear of making the wrong choice.
Once you get to the bottom of why you are stuck you can then set about targeting that paralysing fear. When you know why you are afraid it becomes so much easier to deal with.
Figure out what you want instead.
If you already have a good idea of what you want then start thinking of ways you can make that happen. Figure out what you need to do to get there. Perhaps you need to take a course, save up, make a business plan. Whatever your goal is make a list of what you need to do in order to achieve it.
Take action
Start to bring your dream into focus by trying to do one thing towards it each day or week. Bring it into your life. Set yourself weekly goals to work on in order to start moving towards your goals no matter how small. For example look up that course, do your research, start your business plan. Whatever it is you are working towards take small steps towards it and soon it will be a part of your life and everything else will start to move forwards again. Once you gain that momentum of getting excited and in the creative zone, you will be more resilient to your inner and outer critics, you will start to feel more comfortable with your goal and less comfortable in your rut! As you gain momentum allow yourself to be afraid of the unknown but it won’t be able to hold you back as it did before.
Believe in yourself
Believe you deserve better, believe you are ready to move on, believe you absolutely can do this, believe you are worth it and believe in yourself enough to NEVER give up!
